Journalism and Public Relations Internship Program

GOALS - 1. This academically oriented program is designed to provide students with professional experience relevant to their education, interests, and life goals. It allows for the intern to grow through outside reading, research, and real-life application of skills.
2. The journalism program will permit the intern to significantly contribute to YWAM International Communication by writing journalistic copy for print, media and web. The intern's writing could include stories, captions, headlines, interviews, and/or media releases that will be published in various YWAM publications, as needed.
3. Interns will also develop and maintain the YWAM international web site, by writing and editing content. This could would include editing and collecting material, graphics and photos for posting to the site.
4. As the intern's professional skills expand, and their knowledge of YWAMs global mission develops, additional responsibilities for serving the International Communication's office will arise.
5. When the internship is offered in Cape Town, the program will include all of the above and also will emphasize Africa communications projects and will give exposure to YWAM ministry in the Cape Town area.

OBJECTIVE -

To offer one Journalism Internship Program for the semesters beginning in February, June and September.
-Duration: Approximately three months in length, 10 hours per week minimum.
-Specific start dates, duration, and hours are dependent upon the intern's schedule.
-Potential: Staff position, as Assistant Editor or Field Correspondent, is possible after internship.
-The intern will contribute to YWAM International Communication's overall goal of helping YWAM to fulfill the Great Commission.

SPECIFICS -

1. Qualifications:
>Educational Requirement-
Must have formal or non-formal training in writing and editing. Examples would be college-level journalism or communications course work, or completion of YWAM's School of Frontier Journalism.
>Specialized Training -
Education in: Public relations, marketing, fund raising, photography or desktop publishing would be extremely helpful. Discipleship Training School (DTS): Completion of a DTS is not required, but is a plus.
>Missions Training:
Completion of the Perspectives course or other missions training course is an advantage.
>Experience Required -
Must have experience in writing for publication in a journalistic style and must demonstrate sufficient writing skill. Prior demonstration of organizational skills and personal motivation is essential. Some experience in local or overseas outreach is also necessary.
2. Application:
Must complete the application process, which includes reference forms and writing samples. In addition to writing skills, must demonstrate a strong Christian faith, mature character, and a personal interest in missions.
3. Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship. However, any work-related expenses will be reimbursed.
4. Housing:
YWAM will assist in searching for housing, and will try to arrange for accommodation at a YWAM ministry center.
5. Location:
Either YWAM's International Communications office in Colorado Springs, USA, or YWAM's AfriCom office in Cape Town, South Africa.

EVALUATION -

-Upon completion of the internship, the supervisor will complete the YWAM Journalism Internship Program Performance Evaluation review form with the intern, providing feedback and guidance on the intern's overall performance. The supervisor will meet at least weekly to offer advice on the various tasks and projects. There will also be a mid-internship evaluation. Evaluations will be sent to the intern's advisor, if requested by the academic institution.
-The supervisor will also complete and submit any additional evaluations forms required by the academic institution.
