7. W O R L D :
PRAYER GUIDE HIGHLIGHTS HIGH COST FOR MUSLIMS FINDING NEW FAITH
AN ATTEMPTED MURDER and a mock funeral highlight the high cost of finding faith in Christ in some parts of the world, in a new global prayer campaign.
The true stories of threat and rejection are told in the guide for the next 30 Days Muslim Prayer Focus, which will see up to ten million Christians around the world praying for followers of Islam early next year.
The daily prayer plan tells how one young woman who became a Christian was confronted by her two older brothers who, following local custom, tried to kill her for betraying Islam.
But the gun they used failed six times to fire, so instead they banished her from the family home. Several years later the two brothers and other relatives all became Christians through the woman's steadfast faith.
In another case, the guide tells how a young man in Indonesia was ostracized after he became a Christian. His family held a funeral, symbolizing how he had died to them through his conversion.
"There are many throughout the world who have faced similar circumstances of rejection, exile, torture, persecution and death because of their unwavering faith," says the guide, urging Christians to "pray for the grace to endure under trials and the love to forgive those at those hands they have suffered".
The dangers faced by converts from Islam is just one of the topics covered in the 30 Days prayer guide, which also focuses on different Muslim countries, and the needs of missionaries.
Half a million copies of the booklet are being produced - in 27 languages - for the fifth annual prayer event, which runs parallel to the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, between January 10 and February 8.
Founded by Youth With A Mission, the 30 Days event was established to encourage Christians to pray more seriously for the world's billion Muslims. It coincides with Ramadan - one of the "five pillars of Islam" - as "an act of identification".
