30 Days Prayer Focus
The 2007 Islamic month of fasting, Ramadan, starts September 13. There is always some dispute as the sighting of new crescent moon at sunset determines the exact day; this varies from region to region and is also influenced by visibility (weather and pollution factors).

Join Christians worldwide as they are once again learning about Islam and praying for Muslims during this Ramadan month. To order your 30 Days Prayer Focus booklets  (16th annual edition) click here.

WESTERNERS CONVERT TO ISLAM
It is believed that Europe's traditionally Christian countries have seen an increase since 9/11 of conversions to Islam, the continent's fastest-growing religion. A French newspaper (Le Figaro) citing French Intelligence sources, reported that between 30,000 and 50,000 conversions to Islam took place in France last year. While many of them are women who marry Muslim men, this trend is clearly worrying anti-terrorism officials. Focusing on Arab men is no longer sufficient, as a number of these converts (not just in Europe, but also in the U.S. and Australia) have already been linked to and been convicted for terrorism involvement. Many of the younger male converts are disaffected, and also often come from unstable backgrounds; they find meaning in Islam. A minority of them are drawn to sympathize with the anti-Western sentiments of fundamentalist Muslims, equating it with a kind of justifiable "poor against the rich" stance. (2004)

MUSLIMS IN THE USA, WRONG NUMBER? - Muslim leaders have registered displeasure over the headcount in a new study on religion in America. The study's estimate of the number of Muslims in America—1.56 million—is far below the 6 million to 7 million adherents Muslim leaders often assert in the media. "They may claim whatever they want to claim, but we refuse to accept this report," Faiz Rehman, communications director for the American Muslim Council, told the Washington Post. The Post cited two other studies last year that sided with the data: The City University of New York's Graduate Center, which tallied 1.1 million Muslims in America (1.8 million if children are counted), and the American Jewish Committee, which reported 2.8 million Muslims in the USA. (Crosswalk.com, 2002/09/30; see also a detailed discussion on religious affiliation surveys, and further confirmation for the above cited survey results at www.prb.org)

MOVEMENT FOR PEACE–To counter the persistent religious conflicts in some parts of Nigeria, Christian and Muslim leaders in the state of Bauchi have formed a peace organization called Movement for Peace. The two religions have been in conflict in Nigeria for more than a decade. Co-chaired by a Christian and a Muslim, Movement for Peace was launched when religious leaders found a correlation between inter-religious peace and Nigeria’s economic and world status. (ENI, 02/09/27)

SCHOOL DAYS–The government of Kyrgyzstan has asked Christians to help them with their failing school system. Asked to start 60 pilot schools, the Christians will teach Christian ethics to teachers, and moral training to students. (Intercede, July/August 2002)

ARABIC–According to a PULSE report (2002/10/04), Nigeria’s northern state of Zamfara, which introduced the Islamic legal code in 1999, has now decided to require the use of Arabic for all--including Christians. Fifty percent of Nigeria is Muslim, 40 percent is Christian.
